As the Seagoing Hydrochemist within the Engineering and Technology program in CSIRO’s National Collections and Marine Infrastructure (NCMI), you will provide support to the Marine National Facility (MNF) research vessel, RV Investigator, and the Perth (or Hobart) shore laboratory. You will perform laboratory analyses, maintain laboratory instrumentation and calibrations, prepare for voyages, and discuss results and data quality with clients.  Whilst at sea, you will work closely with the science party to oversee sample collection and perform laboratory analysis of low-level nutrient, high precision salinity, and dissolved oxygen. As part of this role, you will also participate in coastal fieldwork based on small boats including sample collection and in situ nutrient analysis.  On-the-job training and mentoring will be provided.

A requirement of the role is to provide up to 85 days per year of seagoing support on voyages that are typically 2 to 6 weeks in duration.

In this role you will:

  • Collect and analyse seawater samples for a variety of nutrient species
  • Maintain sampling equipment and calibrate analytical equipment (under technical direction).
  • Process analytical results and apply quality measures in alignment with best practices.
  • Liaise with clients, scientists and stakeholders and other experts concerning data collection, processing, archiving and problem resolution.
  • Undertake the role of Hydrochemistry support on MNF research voyages.
  • Use initiative to seek new approaches to problems where methods are not defined.
  • Liaise with clients to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for their satisfaction.
  • Plan, organise and monitor the allocation of laboratory resources.
  • Participate in the planning of projects and accept responsibility for carrying out major aspects.

Location:       Perth, Western Australia preferred, or Hobart, Tasmania may be considered Salary:           AU$87k - AU$98k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation Tenure:          Indefinite, Full-time Reference:    85751

To be considered you will need:

  • A tertiary qualification in Chemistry or equivalent experience in chemistry with an emphasis on analytical chemistry and/or marine chemistry
  • Considerable chemical laboratory experience including experience operating flow-based or automated chemistry instrumentation.
  • Proficiency in reviewing and understanding data including processing and interpretation.
  • Clear and articulate communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively and interact effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong judgement in troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues in a laboratory environment.
  • Proven ability to proactively develop timelines and meet deadlines.
